un canard boiteux: un canard is a duck, boiteux means lame. Naturally, you'd be tempted to translate un canard boiteux by 'a lame duck'. Well, it's not quite what it is. There is no political slant in the French expression un canard boiteux. un canard boiteux is simply a misfit, a bad concept, a bad thing in general.

"We're not going to do that advertising piece with Carla Bruni, it's a bad idea. "
