Buying food at the market
Of course, un kilo de – a kilo of – and une livre de – 500 grams – is the most common way to buy fruit and vegetables. However, at the market, you might have to buy:
- a bunch of asparagus -- une botte d’asperges
- a head of lettuce -- une tête de salade
- a bar of chocolate -- une tablette de chocolat
- a basket of strawberries -- une barquette de fraises
- garlic cloves -- des gousses d’aïl
- an ear of corn -- un épi de maïs
- a stick of butter -- une plaquette, une motte de beurre
- mussels -- un litre de moules - not very much used anymore, as mussels as now sold "au kilo" or by the bag
