Negative Sentences – Part 1 – French grammar

Negative Sentences - French grammar

french, negative sentence

Je ne mange pas de pomme

How do negative sentences work in French? Get the explanation right here.

Look at these examples in the present tense:

1. Je ne chante pas.                          --            I don’t sing.

2. Je ne chante pas de rap.             --            I don’t sing a/ny rap songs.

.

A negative sentence in French has two negative parts, which surround the verb. In our examples, these 2 parts are ne and pas. In most cases, the first part is ne.

............................. not VERB --> ne VERBE pas

............................. I don't eat. -- Je ne mange pas.

To say not VERB a/ny, the French say ne VERBE pas de

............................. not VERB a/ny --> ne VERBE pas de

............................. -- I don't eat any apples. -- Je ne mange pas de pommes.

That’s about it for the basic rule. Pretty easy.
