chaque, tous, toutes etc. - each and every
CHAQUE and TOUS/TOUTES LES are pretty much interchangeable. They both mean ‘every’.
However, if you need to make a difference, I’d say that
- CHAQUE is singular and means ‘each, each and every, every single’
- TOUS/TOUTES LES is plural and means ‘all’ and is also used for expressing a frequency
One thing to keep in mind though: in French, it’s more common to use TOUS/TOUTES LES than CHAQUE.
À chaque Mardi-Gras, je vais à Nice. | At every single Mardi-Gras, I go to Nice. |
Je vais à toutes les fêtes. | I’m going to all of the parties. |
Je vais au piano tous les mardis. | I go to piano class every Tuesday. |
Chaque personne ici parle français. | Each single person here speaks French. |
Tous les gens ici parlent français. | Everyone here speaks French. |
Il voudrait aller à un concert toutes les semaines. | He’d like to go to a concert every week. |
Il voudrait aller à un concert chaque semaine. | He’d like to go to a concert every (single) week. |
Nous pensons à chaque détail. | We’re thinking about each detail. |
Nous pensons à tous les détails. | We’re thinking about all the details. |
On prendra chaque photo en noir et blanc. | We’ll take every picture in black and white. |
On prendra toutes les photos en noir et blanc. | We’ll take all the pictures in black and white |
