You probably know about NE. NE is the necessary half part of any negative sentence.

  • Je ne vais pas à Nice demain.
    • I’m not going to Nice tomorrow.

Well, not always.

When NE isn’t just a negative NE

  • Je crains qu’ils ne fassent une crise.
    • I’m fearing they have a nervous breakdown.
  • Je doute qu’ils ne viennent ce soir.
    • I don’t think they’ll come tonight.
  • Je nie qu’il ne soit parti avant toi.
    • I deny he left before you.
  • Nous nettoyons avant que vous ne passiez demain.
    • We’re cleaning before your coming tomorrow.
  • Nous viendrons vous voir demain à moins que vous ne soyez déjà partis.
    • We’ll come and visit tomorrow unless you’re already gone.
  • Nous ne viendrons pas à Paris sans que vous ne nous y ayez invités.
    • We won’t come to Paris unless you invited us there.
  • Elle aime le chocolat plus qu’elle ne le pense.
    • She likes chocolate more than she thinks.
