ENNUI, S’ENNUYER – Today’s French

BOREDOM or BORED

Part of Learning Activities French Headaches

ENNUI and S’ENNUYER have many variants and many meanings in French. We’ll untangle the main uses here. The exercise at the end of the lesson will help you sort it out.

One thing to remember: the French prefer to use the verb rather than the adjective. They prefer saying : « Le film m’ennuie. » rather than « Le film est ennuyeux. »

  1. ennuyer quelqu’un …. to bore someone, to upset, to annoy, to bother someone
  2. s’ennuyer, s’emmerder (familiar) …. to be/get/become bored
  3. ennuyeux, ennuyeuse …. boring, annoying, troublesome
  4. être ennuyé.e …. to be uncomfortable, in a pickle
  5. un ennui, l’ennui …. a problem, boredom
  6. avoir des ennuis …. to be in trouble
