Ten literary prizes
There are numerous literary prizes in France. Here are the top ten.

The Goncourt Prize, endowed with 10 Euros, is the most famous French literary awards. It was founded on December 21, 1903 by the will of historian and writer Edmond de Goncourt in memory of his brother Jules. Its purpose is to encourage fraternal and material life of writers. It rewards a French novel published in the year and is usually announced at the Drouant Restaurant (Place Gaillon, Paris) in early November. Note that, in a century, merely two publishing houses, Gallimard and Grasset, share more than 60% of the Prix Goncourt.

The Nobel Prize is one of five major awards established by will in 1896 by Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) to reward scientists, statesmen and writers benefactors of humanity in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, peace and literature. He used to be endowed with 10 million kroner (approximately € 1.1 million) before, and now, due to the financiel crisis, the amount is of about 8 million kronor, or about 903,000 euros. It is awarded the first week of October of each year by the Swedish Academy. The selections are made in great secrecy and the reward often has a political resonance, the Nobel jury did not hesitate to give the literature prize to persecuted writers or authors banned from publishing in their country. The Nobel Prize for Literature is also one of the few major international literary awards to reward poets or novelists whose work is often complex, and thus little known to the general public.
