Chez le docteur

Don’t say “I want the doctor” instead of « I want medicine » at your next visit to the doctor’s. Here is a series of phrases and sentences to help you at your visit to the French doctor’s or if you are a doctor treating French-speaking patients.

I hurt

Saying “I hurt” is easy, it’s “J’ai mal à”. However, saying where you hurt is more complicated because you have to know if the body part where you hurt is masculine, feminine or plural. The preposition À changes according to the gender of the noun that follows:

• when the noun is masculine

à becomes au –> au dos

J’ai mal au dos.

• when the noun is feminine

à becomes à la –> à la tête

J’ai mal à la tête.

• when the noun starts with a vowel

à becomes à l’ –> à l’épaule

J’ai mal à l’épaule.

• when the noun is plural, no matter the gender

à becomes aux –> aux dents

J’ai mal aux dents.
