Political Parties in France

There are many many political parties in France, especially now that the 2012 Presidential election gets closer (April 22 and May 6).

Political parties change their policies, platforms, and leaders fairly often. In this unit, we will just name the major ones in alphabetic order, with their current leaders.

  1. EELV (Europe-Écologie Les Verts) – Eva Joly et Cécile Duflot
  2. FN (Front National) - Marine Le Pen and her father Jean-Marie Le Pen
  3. MoDem (Mouvement Démocrate) - François Bayrou
  4. NPA (Nouveau Parti Anticapitaliste) – Philippe Poutou
  5. PG (Parti de Gauche) – Jean-Luc Mélenchon
  6. PCF (Parti Communiste Français) - Marie-George Buffet
  7. PS (Parti Socialiste) – Martine Aubry and François Hollande, President candidate’s Ségolène Royal’s ex-husband
  8. UMP (Union pour un Mouvement Populaire) - French president Nicolas Sarkozy until his election, and now Jean-François Copé

Names about French Politics

Sometimes the newspapers refer to places to designate offices.

. L’Élysée or Le palais de l’Élysée is the official residence of the President. It also represents the services of the presidency

. Matignon or l’Hôtel Matignon is the official residence of the Prime minister

. Le Quai d’Orsay is the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs

. Le Palais Bourbon is the French National Assembly

. La Place Vendôme is French Ministry of Justice

French Unions

A lot of the unions were founded at the beginning of the 20th century. They are generally related to political parties. There are 3 main groups of unions (syndicats) in France:

1.   les syndicats des salariés (wage-earners unions): la CGT and la CFDT are the major ones.

2.   les syndicats des étudiants et lycéens (college and high-school students unions): l’UNEF et le SUD

3.   les syndicats du patronat (employers unions): le MEDEF, la FNSEA
